英語中的過去式
英語主要有兩種形式來表達過去：
- 簡單過去式 (simple past)：Last summer, I traveled to Japan (去年夏天，我去了日本)
- 過去進行式 (past continuous)：I was working when she called (她打電話來時我正在工作)
技術上來說，現在完成式（present perfect）和過去完成式（past perfect）也可以表達過去的概念，但這些時態將在其他專門的文章中介紹。
請注意：簡單過去式（prétérit）和 simple past 在指稱上是完全相同的時態，只是稱呼不同而已。
過去進行式（past continuous）、過去進行式（prétérit progressif）和過去持續式（prétérit continu）也是完全的同義詞，它們都指向相同的語法結構。
使用情境
這兩種形式各有其特定的用法和不同的情境。
簡單過去式用於表達：
- 已完成且結束的動作：Two years ago, I visited New York. (兩年前，我造訪了紐約。)
- 歷史事實或既有事實：In ancient Rome, citizens spoke Latin. (在古羅馬，公民們說拉丁語。)
- 已成過去的習慣：During my childhood, I read comics every evening. (在我童年時，我每晚都看漫畫。)
- 過去事件的連續發生：She opened the door, switched off the lights, and left the building. (她打開門、關掉燈，然後離開了建築物。)
過去進行式用於表達：
- 過去某個特定時刻正在進行的動作：At 9 AM yesterday, I was attending a meeting. (昨天早上九點，我正在參加會議。)
- 過去兩個同時發生的動作：While she was preparing lunch, he was cleaning the house. (當她在準備午餐時，他在打掃房子。)
- 一個被突發事件所中斷的動作：I was taking a shower when someone knocked on the door. (我正在洗澡時，有人敲了門。)
- 敘事中的背景或氣氛營造：The wind was blowing, and dark clouds were gathering in the sky. (風在吹，暗雲正在天空中聚集。)
