Le forme del passato in inglese

La lingua inglese presenta 2 forme principali per esprimere il passato:

  • Il Simple Past (prétérit semplice): Last summer, I traveled to Japan
  • Il Past Continuous (prétérit continuo): I was working when she called
⚠️ Tecnicamente, il Present Perfect e il Past Perfect possono anch'essi esprimere nozioni di passato, ma queste strutture sono oggetto di lezioni specifiche dedicate
I termini prétérit e past simple indicano esattamente la stessa forma verbale, si tratta semplicemente di due denominazioni distinte.
Il past continuous, il prétérit progressivo e il prétérit continuo sono anch'essi sinonimi perfetti che si riferiscono alla stessa struttura grammaticale.

Situazioni d'uso

Ciascuna di queste due forme corrisponde a usi specifici e a contesti distinti.

Il Simple Past serve per esprimere:

  • un'azione conclusa e terminata: Two years ago, I visited New York
  • una successione di eventi passati: She opened the door, switched off the lights, and left the building.
  • un'abitudine passata: During my childhood, I read comics every evening.
  • realtà o fatti storici: In ancient Rome, citizens spoke Latin.

Il Past Continuous serve per esprimere:

  • un'azione in corso in un dato momento del passato: At 9 AM yesterday, I was attending a meeting.
  • un'azione interrotta da un evento improvviso: I was taking a shower when someone knocked on the door.
  • due azioni parallele nel passato: While she was preparing lunch, he was cleaning the house.
  • l'ambientazione o l'atmosfera di un racconto: The wind was blowing, and dark clouds were gathering in the sky.
