TOEIC® Prepositions with Nouns: Essential Combinations + Quick Method
Flow Exam team
The prepositions that accompany nouns follow fixed rules in English.
For the TOEIC®, you need to know that we say "interest in something" but "concern about something".
These noun + preposition combinations appear constantly in Part 5 and create traps that are easy to avoid.
The problem? Obviously, you can't translate things literally from your native language.
The Most Tested Noun + Preposition Combinations in the TOEIC®
Part 5 tests your knowledge of the prepositions that follow common nouns within a professional context. These pairings are fixed and you need to memorize them.
Here are the most frequent combinations on the test:
| Name | Preposition | TOEIC® Example |
|---|---|---|
| Interest | in | The company has shown interest in expanding overseas. |
| concern | about | There is growing concern about workplace safety. |
| Reason | for | The reason for the delay was detailed in the email. |
| Access | to | All employees can access the training platform. |
| solution | to | We need to find a solution to this recurring problem. |
| Advantage | of | Take advantage of the early registration discount. |
| Difference | between | The difference between the two proposals is minimal. |
| Relationship | between/with | The relationship between departments has improved. |
| Impact | on | The policy positively impacted productivity. |
| impact | on | The new schedule does not impact overtime pay. |
These phrases commonly appear in professional emails, company policies, or internal announcements.
Les 3 erreurs qui coûtent des points en Partie 5
Translate Literally From Your Native Language
You lose points when you apply the logic of your native language, such as French. In French, we say "intérêt pour" (interest for), so you are tempted to write "interest for." Result: incorrect answer.
- Management expressed interest in the proposal. -> Incorrect
- The management expressed interest in the proposal. -> Correct
La direction a exprimé un intérêt pour la proposition.
This pitfall comes up with "solution à" which becomes "solution to" and not "solution of". Same thing for "impact sur" which becomes "impact on" and not "impact over".
Confusing Similar Prepositions
Some nouns take different prepositions, but with different meanings. Part 5 focuses on these nuances.
-> Agreement on = agreement on a subject
- We reached an agreement on the budget.
Nous avons trouvé un accord sur le budget.
-> Agreement with = agreement with someone
- The company signed an agreement with the supplier.
L'entreprise a signé un accord avec le fournisseur.
-> Difference between = difference between two elements
- The difference between the two models is the warranty period.
La différence entre les deux modèles est la période de garantie.
-> Difference in = difference in one aspect
- There is a difference in quality.
Il y a une différence dans la qualité.
Forgetting That Certain Nouns Don't Need a Preposition
Sometimes, no preposition is needed. This is a classic trap where all the provided options include a preposition, except for one.
- We discussed about the project / We discussed of the project -> Incorrect
- We discussed the project. -> Correct
Nous avons discuté du projet.
"Discussion" takes a preposition ("discussion about"), but "discuss" (the verb) does not. Confusion between the noun and the verb causes many candidates to lose points.
Comment identifier la bonne préposition en conditions réelles
Under pressure on exam day, you don't have time to think about the rule. You need to build reflexes based on quick visual cues.
Frequent Collocations Method
Certain combinations appear so frequently in a business context that they become instantly recognizable:
- "access to" (access to resources, data, services)
- "impact on" (impact on performance, results, morale)
- "reason for" (reason for a delay, change, decision)
- "solution to" (solution to a problem, challenge)
- "demand for" (demand for products, services)
If you see "access" in a sentence and the options are "to / for / of / with," choose "to" without hesitation. This habit will save you 5 to 10 seconds per question.
Quick Score Check (Under 3 Seconds)
| Clue in the sentence | Likely Preposition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name + Two Items Compared | between | team collaboration |
| Name + One affected item | on | impact on sales |
| Name + What You Get/Achieve | to | Access to data |
| Name + What's on Your Mind | About | cost concerns |
| Name + What Interests You | in | interest in technology |
This chart will quickly help you eliminate 2 to 3 options and focus on the right choice.
Specific Traps in Part 5
TOEIC® questions are built around 3 types of tricky patterns that frequently appear involving prepositions and nouns.
Trap 1: Prepositions that 'sound good' in French
The question offers 4 prepositions, one of which is the direct French translation. This option is almost always incorrect.
- The report highlighted the need for better communication.
- The report highlighted the need for better communication. -> Correct
Le rapport a souligné le besoin d'une meilleure communication.
Pitfall 2: Similar Names with Different Prepositions
Two names from the same family take different prepositions. The test mixes both in the same paragraph.
- Our response to customer complaints has improved.
Notre réponse aux réclamations clients s'est améliorée. - We are responsible for handling complaints.
Nous sommes responsables de la gestion des réclamations.
If you read too quickly, you might confuse "response to" and "responsible for" because they share the same root.
Mistake 3: Preposition Separated from the Noun
The noun and its preposition are separated by several words, which makes the combination less obvious.
- The company's interest, which was expressed during the meeting last week, in sustainable practices is genuine.
L'intérêt de l'entreprise pour les pratiques durables, qui a été exprimé lors de la réunion la semaine dernière, est sincère.
You need to notice that "interest" is followed by "in," even with 10 words in between.
Les contextes TOEIC® où ces prépositions apparaissent
Nouns with prepositions appear in typical test work situations.
Internal Emails and Announcements
- "Please note the change in policy regarding remote work."
Veuillez noter le changement dans la politique concernant le télétravail. - "We appreciate your cooperation in this matter."
Nous apprécions votre coopération dans cette affaire.
Reports & Analysis
- "The increase in sales exceeded expectations."
L'augmentation des ventes a dépassé les attentes. - "The analysis shows a correlation between marketing spend and revenue."
L'analyse montre une corrélation entre les dépenses marketing et le chiffre d'affaires.
Meetings and Decisions
- "The decision on the new supplier will be announced tomorrow."
La décision concernant le nouveau fournisseur sera annoncée demain. - "There was unanimous support for the initiative."
Il y avait un soutien unanime pour l'initiative.
Besides, these business contexts become familiar after about twenty targeted questions.
Summary of Frequent Errors

| solution for | Template/Copy of "a solution of" | solution for | We need a solution for the staffing issue. |
| impact over | Bad 'power over' analogy | impact on | The storm affected deliveries. |
| interest for | Translation of "interest in" | interest in | The client expressed interest in our services. |
| access to | Confusion with "possession of" | Access to | Employees can access the database. |
| reason for | Direct translation of the French "raison de" (meaning "reason for") | reason for | The cancellation was due to weather conditions. |
| concern on | False analogy with "impact on" | concern about | There is concern about the deadline. |
