Adjectives + Prepositions in English: The Complete Guide for the TOEIC®

(Updated: March 30, 2026)

Flow Exam team

In English, certain adjectives always pair with the same preposition. "Responsible for", "familiar with", "interested in": these are fixed collocations.

These structures frequently appear in Part 5 of the TOEIC®. You need to choose the correct preposition from four options.

For example: "The manager is responsible ___ training new employees" (Answer: "for").

The main trap? Translating word-for-word from French: in French, we say "responsable de," but in English, it is "responsible for."

Why These Collocations Cause Problems on the TOEIC®

The primary difficulty: there is no universal logic. You cannot guess the preposition based on the adjective's meaning.

"Interested in" and "excited about" both express interest but use different prepositions.

Test designers exploit this on the TOEIC®. They systematically offer prepositions that sound plausible but are incorrect. If you hesitate between two options, it means you don't know the collocation by heart.

The Most Common Traps in Part 5

Questions usually offer four different prepositions for the same adjective. The traps (incorrect answers) are chosen to mislead you:

  • Prepositions that work with similar adjectives ("interested in" → they offer "about" because "excited about" exists).
  • Prepositions that match the French translation ("responsible for" → they offer "of" because in French you say "responsable de").
  • Very common prepositions that seem neutral ("with", "of", "to").

The candidates we coach who progress the fastest stop looking for logic. They focus on memorizing the most frequent combinations. And it works.

The 15 Combinations That Come Up All the Time

These adjective + preposition pairs appear regularly in Part 5. Memorize them, focusing on the typical professional context of the TOEIC®:

Mistakes That Cost You Points

Even among candidates who already use an exam preparation platform through their school, confusion between "responsible for" and "responsible of" constantly reappears in Part 5.

The reason is simple: these tools emphasize the rule but rarely instill the reflex you need under pressure.

Classic Confusions

Here are the most frequent errors, with the immediate correction:

Error CorrectionTOEIC® Trap
interested aboutinterested in"about" is suggested because "excited about" exists
responsible ofresponsible fordirect translation of the French "responsable de"
familiar tofamiliar with"to" seems logical but is incorrect
different thandifferent from"than" works with comparative adjectives, not here
satisfied ofsatisfied withinfluence of the French "satisfait de"
capable tocapable ofconfusion with "able to"

Practical Method for Part 5

When you see an adjective in a Part 5 question, follow this effective procedure:

1. Identify the Adjective

Spot the word describing a state or quality. It is usually right before the blank:

  • "The manager is responsible ___ the budget."
    The adjective is "responsible."

2. Look for the Memorized Collocation

Do not think about logic. Ask yourself: which preposition ALWAYS goes with this adjective? For "responsible," it is always "for."

3. Quick Context Check

Confirm that the general meaning works: "The manager is responsible for the budget." The manager is in charge of the budget. That works. Confirm your answer.

4. Ignore the Traps

Don't waste time analyzing why the other prepositions are offered. If you know the correct collocation, move on to the next question.

Special Cases You Should Know

Some adjectives accept multiple prepositions depending on the context. These cases are rare on the TOEIC®, but they do exist.

"Angry": at/with/about

  • angry with someone
  • angry about something
  • angry at someone/something (less formal, mainly American)

Example:

  • "She was angry with her colleague for missing the deadline."

"Good": at/for

  • good at doing something
  • good for something (beneficial for)

Example:

  • "He is good at analyzing data."

What we observe among our candidates: these special cases rarely appear in Part 5. The TOEIC® favors fixed, unambiguous collocations.

If you master the 15 combinations in the table above, you cover 90% of the questions on this topic.

Checklist Before Test Day

Here are the reflexes to confirm before taking your TOEIC®:

  • You know the 15 main combinations by heart (table above).
  • You no longer translate directly from French (responsible ≠ "de").
  • You quickly identify the adjective in the sentence.
  • You don't waste time analyzing distractors.
  • You have completed timed Part 5 exercises focusing on this topic.

The candidates who progress fastest share one trait: they accept memorizing without looking for a logic that doesn't exist. Once the combinations are stored in memory, the questions become automatic.
