ইংরেজিতে, একটি préposition (অব্যয়) হলো এমন একটি terme (শব্দ) বা শব্দের সমষ্টি যা একটি বিশেষ্য (বা সর্বনাম) এবং বাক্যের অন্যান্য উপাদানগুলির মধ্যে একটি সংযোগ স্থাপন করে। এটি অবস্থান, সময়কাল, দিক, কারণ, অধিকার, কর্তা এবং আরও অনেক সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করতে সাহায্য করে।

সাধারণত, অব্যয়টি সরাসরি বিশেষ্য বা সর্বনাম-এর আগে বসে। তবে, আধুনিক ইংরেজিতে কখনও কখনও বাক্যের শেষে একটি অব্যয় ব্যবহার করা অনুমোদিত, বিশেষ করে কথ্য ভাষায় (registre familier) এবং কিছু বাগধারা (idiomatic expressions) ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রে।

1. স্থানবাচক অব্যয় (Les prépositions spatiales)
স্থানবাচক অব্যয়গুলি (Spatial prepositions) নির্দিষ্ট করে যে কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু মহাকাশে কোথায় অবস্থিত।
