Hướng dẫn về các từ nối – Luyện thi TOEIC®

Các từ nối logic, còn được gọi là "linking words" hoặc "connectors", có chức năng tạo mối liên kết giữa các ý tưởng và đảm bảo tính mạch lạc của văn bản và lời nói. Hướng dẫn này trình bày các nhóm từ nối chính, được phân loại theo chức năng giao tiếp của chúng.

1. Các từ nối bổ sung và liệt kê

Các thuật ngữ này cho phép giới thiệu một yếu tố bổ sung, tiếp tục một lập luận hoặc sắp xếp các luận điểm theo một trình tự logic hoặc phân cấp.

Lưu ý quan trọng

"And" là từ nối trung tính nhất để kết hợp hai yếu tố có cùng bản chất.
"Besides" hoạt động như một giới từ với nghĩa "bên cạnh" (ví dụ: "The keys are beside the door."), nhưng khi là từ nối, nó có nghĩa là "ngoài ra / hơn thế nữa".
Các biến thể first/firstly, second/secondly là tương đương về mặt ngữ nghĩa, nhưng dạng có "-ly" thuộc phong cách trang trọng hơn.

2. Các từ nối chỉ nguyên nhân và kết quả

Các từ này diễn tả mối quan hệ nhân quả: chúng chỉ rõ nguồn gốc của một sự kiện (nguyên nhân) hoặc hệ quả của nó (kết quả).

Lưu ý quan trọng

"So" chủ yếu được sử dụng trong giao tiếp bằng lời nói và trong ngữ cảnh không trang trọng.
"Therefore", "thus", "consequently" và "hence" thuộc phong cách trang trọng và đặc biệt phù hợp với văn viết học thuật hoặc chuyên nghiệp.
"Due to" và "owing to" được theo sau bởi một cụm danh từ hoặc một dạng V-ing:
- The cancellation was due to insufficient registrations.
- Owing to missing the train, she arrived late.

Lưu ý quan trọng

"Unless" diễn tả một điều kiện phủ định ("nếu... không..."):
- "I won't attend unless..." = "Tôi sẽ không tham dự trừ khi..."
"Provided (that)" và "providing (that)" là có thể thay thế cho nhau, mặc dù "provided that" phổ biến hơn trong văn bản trang trọng.

4. Các từ nối chỉ sự đối lập và sự nhượng bộ

Lưu ý quan trọng

"But" là từ nối đối lập phổ biến và trung tính nhất.
"Though" có thể đặt ở cuối câu trong phong cách thân mật:
- It was challenging, though.
"Despite" và "in spite of" được theo sau bởi một danh từ hoặc một dạng V-ing:
- Despite the obstacles, they persevered.
- In spite of feeling exhausted, she completed the marathon.

5. Các từ nối chỉ mục đích

Lưu ý quan trọng

"To" là hình thức đơn giản nhất để diễn tả mục đích, thường được theo sau bởi một động từ ở dạng nguyên mẫu không "to" (base verb).
"So that" và "in order that" giới thiệu một mệnh đề hoàn chỉnh với chủ ngữ và động từ chia:
- I repeated the instructions so that no one would be confused.

Lưu ý quan trọng

"Such as" và "like" giới thiệu trực tiếp các ví dụ cụ thể mà không cần dấu câu đặc biệt.
"e.g." là viết tắt tiếng Latin được ưu tiên dùng trong văn bản học thuật hoặc kỹ thuật, thường được đặt trong ngoặc đơn.
"For example" và "for instance" hoàn toàn có thể thay thế cho nhau và được dùng để giới thiệu một minh họa.

7. Các từ nối tóm tắt và kết luận

Lưu ý quan trọng

"In conclusion" và "to conclude" thuộc phong cách trang trọng và phù hợp cho bài thuyết trình hoặc bài viết chuyên nghiệp.
"All in all" và "in short" mang tính không trang trọng hơn và thường được sử dụng trong giao tiếp bằng lời nói.
