למחברים לוגיים, המכונים גם "linking words" או "connectors", יש תפקיד של יצירת קשרים בין רעיונות והבטחת לכידות טקסטואלית ומדוברת. מדריך זה מציג את קטגוריות המחברים העיקריות, המסווגות לפי תפקידן התקשורתי.

1. מחברים של הוספה וספירה

מילים אלו מאפשרות להציג אלמנט נוסף, להמשיך טיעון או לארגן טיעונים לפי סדר הגיוני או היררכי.

נקודות לתשומת לב

"And" הוא המחבר הניטרלי ביותר לשיוך שני אלמנטים מאותו סוג.
"Besides" מתפקד כמילת יחס במשמעות של "ליד" (לדוגמה: "The keys are beside the door."), אך כמחבר, משמעותו "בנוסף / יתר על כן".
הווריאציות first/firstly, second/secondly הן שקולות מבחינה סמנטית, אך הצורה עם "-ly" שייכת לרמה גבוהה יותר (רשמית יותר).

2. מחברים של סיבה ותוצאה

מילים אלו מבטאות יחסי סיבתיות: הן מפרטות את מקור האירוע (סיבה) או את ההשפעה שלו (תוצאה).

הבעת תוצאה

נקודות לתשומת לב

"So" משמש בעיקר בדיבור ובהקשרים לא פורמליים.
"Therefore", "thus", "consequently" ו-"hence" שייכים לרמה רשמית ומתאימים במיוחד לכתיבה אקדמית או מקצועית.
"Due to" ו-"owing to" נבנים עם צירוף שמני או שם פועל (גרונדיום):
- The cancellation was due to insufficient registrations.
- Owing to missing the train, she arrived late.

3. מחברים של תנאי

"Unless" מבטא תנאי שלילי ("אם לא"):
- "I won't attend unless..." = "לא אגיע אלא אם כן..."
"Provided (that)" ו-"providing (that)" הם ניתנים להחלפה, אם כי "provided that" נפוץ יותר בטקסטים רשמיים.

4. מחברים של ניגוד והכנעה

"But" הוא מחבר הניגוד הנפוץ והניטרלי ביותר.
"Though" יכול להופיע בסוף משפט ברמה יומיומית/לא רשמית:
- It was challenging, though.
"Despite" ו-"in spite of" נבנים עם שם עצם או שם פועל (גרונדיום):
- Despite the obstacles, they persevered.
- In spite of feeling exhausted, she completed the marathon.

5. מחברים של מטרה

"To" הוא הצורה הפשוטה ביותר להבעת תכלית, בדרך כלל ואחריו פועל בצורת בסיס (אינפיניטיב ללא to).
"So that" ו-"in order that" פותחים פסוקית שלמה עם נושא ופועל מוטה:
- I repeated the instructions so that no one would be confused.

6. מחברים של המחשה ודוגמה

"Such as" ו-"like" מציגים ישירות דוגמאות קונקרטיות ללא סימני פיסוק מיוחדים.
"e.g." הוא קיצור לטיני המועדף בטקסטים אקדמיים או טכניים, בדרך כלל בסוגריים.
"For example" ו-"for instance" הם ניתנים להחלפה לחלוטין ומשמשים להצגת המחשה.

"In conclusion" ו-"to conclude" שייכים לרמה רשמית ומתאימים למצגות או כתיבה מקצועית.
"All in all" ו-"in short" הם יותר לא פורמליים ומשמשים לעתים קרובות בדיבור.
