Guide to the Future with the Present Continuous – TOEIC® Preparation

Flow Exam team

In English, you have multiple ways to talk about the future: "will", "be going to", but also the present continuous when you want to discuss already organized events, fixed appointments, or concrete plans in the near future. Let's explore the contexts for using the present continuous with a future meaning:

When to use the present continuous to talk about the future?

The present continuous is used to talk about an imminent or already arranged future, typically when the action is confirmed, scheduled, and all the details are settled. Imagine an event written in your calendar or an activity already slotted into your schedule.

  • I am meeting my manager tomorrow at 10 AM.(The appointment is fixed and confirmed.)
  • We are leaving next week for our vacation.(Reservations are made, dates are set.)
  • She is hosting a party on Saturday.(The event is organized, invitations are sent out.)
  • They are moving to a new apartment in January.(The contract is signed, the moving date is set.)

In all these examples, we are talking about a concrete and confirmed plan. This is not a simple prediction or a vague intention, but rather a future action planned with certainty.

As with the classic use of the present continuous, this form does not work with stative verbs. To learn more about this point:❤️ Course on the present continuous❤️ List of stative verbs

Future with "be going to" or with the present continuous?

The structure "be going to" is generally used to express an intention or a strong probability. It can indicate a plan, even if that plan is not necessarily completely organized. In many cases, "be going to" and the present continuous can be used interchangeably for foreseen actions.

  • I am meeting him tomorrow. = I am going to meet him tomorrow.(In both cases, the meeting is planned for tomorrow.)

However, the present continuous suggests that the event is better organized and that there is more certainty. With "be going to", the emphasis is on the intention to do something, rather than on the idea of an event already written in an agenda.

  • I am going to visit my grandmother next month.(may sound like "I intend to do it", whereas)
  • I am visiting my grandmother next month.(probably implies that everything is arranged: dates confirmed, transport booked, etc.)

Future with "will" or with the present continuous?

The future with "will" is mainly used for:

  1. Immediate decisions:
    • Oh, the phone is ringing. I'll answer it.(Decision made instantly.)
  2. Promises, predictions, offers, threats…
    • I will help you with your homework.(Promise)
    • You will succeed if you study hard.(Prediction)

Conversely, the present continuous is used to talk about an established future intention, a set future plan. With "will", we are often dealing with spontaneous reaction or general prediction.

  • I will take the train tomorrow morning.(emphasizes willingness or simple assertion of the future, whereas)
  • I am taking the train tomorrow morning.(insists on the fact that it is already organized, the ticket is bought, the schedule is fixed, etc.)
